More than one route into a formulation brief
A cosmetic development brief sets more requirements than an ingredient name: the target material loading, appearance of the base and sourcing requirements all matter. PINHONBIO® L-Ergothioneine offers a grade-selection question that can be addressed early, before a promising prototype becomes difficult to reproduce.
The practical opportunity is to choose a material that fits the intended development study. A high-purity option and a lower-content option bring different quantities of material into the same formula; the choice should be intentional.
The confirmed identity and grade distinctions
The listed identity is L-Ergothioneine, INCI Ergothioneine, CAS 497-30-3, under PH-NP 015. HPLC is the published analytical method. The current portfolio lists 0.5%, 1%, 2% and 99% grades; the source information below applies only to the named options.
| Grade | Published source and appearance |
|---|---|
| 99% | Yeast-derived; white to off-white crystalline powder |
| 1% / 0.5% | Mushroom-derived; pale-yellow powder |
| 2% | Listed option; no source or appearance assigned here |
Select for the question you want to answer
A concentrated grade can suit a study designed around a clearly specified raw-material identity. A lower-content grade can be assessed when the complete material profile fits the development brief. Neither choice automatically establishes a better finished cosmetic.
Ask what else enters the formula with the selected material and record the complete grade composition. Use the batch assay to calculate nominal active loading. Avoid comparing two prototypes by the same material percentage when their ingredient concentrations differ.
Bring appearance into the first trial
A pale or transparent product concept has a different appearance brief from a richer, colored emulsion. Compare each proposed grade in the actual base against an otherwise matched control, and record color, odor, uniformity and any change during storage.
Supplier descriptions are useful for choosing what to sample. They cannot replace observations in the complete formula. Set incorporation conditions from the selected grade’s technical guidance; do not transfer a source description or handling instruction from another grade.
Application scenarios start with the format
For a serum concept, a useful first study asks whether the material can be incorporated uniformly while meeting the intended appearance. For a cream concept, it asks how the ingredient fits the base, process and final sensory profile. These are proposed formulation studies, not tested recipes or guaranteed performance outcomes.
Connect any eventual cosmetic positioning to a defined finished-product assessment. Ingredient identity, source and assay are raw-material selection evidence; they do not by themselves support an appearance or protection claim.
Specify the sample you actually need
Give the technical team the grade, intended format, appearance target and source requirements. Request that grade’s specification, TDS, SDS and batch COA, then keep the material record with the prototype. This makes a later change of grade a deliberate development decision rather than an unnoticed substitution.
